SEARCHING FOR MISSING PETS

Picture
LOST PETS.   As pet owners we understand how stressful it is to have one of your four-legged family members go missing.  We are often asked if club members and their dogs can help in the search for a lost pet.  However, our dogs are trained to follow human scent, and to ignore the scent trails of other animals.  Therefore it is not likely that they would be successful in a search for another animal.

DOGS:

• If your dog is friendly, it probably went in search of attention from other dogs or other people. Check neighbours' yards, public parks and anywhere nearby where people gather.

• If your dog is shy or older, it might try to hide in bushes, under cars or in someone's yard.

• Dogs will go much further than cats. A small dog might only go exploring for 1-1.5km, but a large, young dog could go running for 8km or more -- just not in a straight line. Most dogs are recovered within a few kilometres of home.

If possible, don't stray too far from home, or have someone stationed there as you search. Lost pets will usually try to return home when they realise there's nothing familiar around them, but often get distracted or confused. Even so, have someone around just in case they come back on their own.

Although this is an American website it contains useful information to assist you to find your lost pet, whether its a dog or cat or another animal.
