HOW TO CHOOSE A TRACKING HARNESS
Welcome to the Evergreen Tracking Dog Club. Our Club is dedicated to fostering the training of tracking dogs by providing training assistance to our members and promoting responsible dog ownership to the community.
What is tracking? Briefly, tracking involves training a dog to follow a scent trail which is left behind as a person walks across the ground and to find any discarded articles of clothing the person has left along the track. You do not need to ‘teach’ your dog to track as all breeds of dog are born with this ability. Tracking uses the dogs natural scenting instincts which is both enjoyable and rewarding for the dog. However, you do need to teach your dog to identify a specific scent and to follow that scent when you ask. The dogs wear a harness attached to a 10 metre lead, similar to police tracker dogs.
Tracking is mostly a winter sport and is conducted between the months of April and August to avoid the heat. You may wish to track with your dog just for the sheer pleasure or you may wish to eventually enter a Tracking Trial. Trials are usually held in rural areas. Evergreen's trialing grounds are at Tansey, near Kilkivan in S.E. Queensland.

Who can track? Tracking is a sport that is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and who enjoys spending time outdoors with their dog.
All breeds of dog can track, whether they are pedigree or non-pedigree. Tracking dogs work at their own pace and training methods are totally free of compulsion. You can't force your dog to track if he doesn't want to. Motivation is the key to success in tracking (or any other training for that matter).
